Companionship
and Socialization for Older Seniors
Palm Beach County, Florida
Research
indicates that people who
engage life and have good social networks maintain their
sense of dignity and self worth. Maintaining supportive
relationships is an important element of effective
aging. The more contact we have with others, the better
chance we have of staying well and retaining mental
acuity.
It has been
determined the elderly
who feel socially isolated are characterized by high
levels of anxiety, hostility, pessimism, and by feelings of
general unhappiness and dissatisfaction with their
quality of life. Elders become despondent and begin to
feel that life is not worth living.
Quality
social interaction can be
mentally and physically restorative. Shared laughter is
a “high” at any age. Perceived social connectedness can
lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and
help us heal faster after surgery.
We can
change the way we age by
staying active physically, spiritually, emotionally,
intellectually and socially. Staying involved keeps us
alert and enjoying a productive life. Staying involved
keeps us
Socially
Connected. |
